2012 Jan Rowe
Jan commenced quilting in 1996 after she and her husband had a trip around the world. She bought fabric from the countries they visited, for her sister, who was a quilter.
Unfortunately for her sister, Jan decided to use the fabric herself to record their trip and Jan has been quilting avidly ever since.
While travelling, Jan carries a small sketch book and takes photos for inspiration.
Jan uses a variety of fabrics for her quilts, chosen to suit the effect she is trying to achieve. Creatively working with fabrics whether cotton, silk or synthetic is her favourite pastime.
Similarly, her quilts show many techniques, including piecing, free motion embroidery and quilting.
Jan prefers hand work for projects on the go and machine work for larger projects.
The quilts on display represent Jan’s memories of the many places they have visited and are like photo albums hanging on the wall.

My journey from beginner quilter to quilt artist has taken 20 odd years. Experimenting with different styles, techniques and materials has enabled me to express myself in textiles.
From my early traditional quilts to my current work I have gained great satisfaction in creating both practical bedding and aesthetically
pleasing artwork.
Like most of my fellow quilters I began with traditional designs and methods, since then I have allowed myself greater leeway with shapes and colour, developing my own semi-abstract style. Incorporated in this is thread drawing, beadwork and custom hand dyed fabric.
I have been influenced by a number of other quilters over the years, namely well known American quilters Carol Bryer-Fallert and Nancy Crow whose work has inspired me time and again to use greater colour and a sense of movement in my own designs.
My style is still evolving, moving away from geometric, asymmetrical and pictorial designs towards a more organic free flowing form with a bolder use of colour and texture, often allowing the Australian landscapes to influence my designs and colour choices.
Having a grounding in the Arts and having lived and travelled extensively overseas has influenced my colour choices. It hasn’t always been possible to get the exact colour or shade required, this in turn has led me to create my own fabrics.
Fabric dyeing and creating my own fabric has become a passion for me and any opportunity that I have I love to share my knowledge with others, conducting fabric dyeing classes at my home or where asked.
